Adventure Dolphin - Voyageurs Ice Cap Expedition, 1984

History   Voyageurs   Lapp Trek   Artic Way

In the summer months of 1984, a 350 mile journey was made in Canadian canoes and on foot by 39 young people and 12 staff from Adventure Dolphin, Berkshire’s Youth and Community outdoor activity provision at Pangbourne.

The plan was simple. To follow the inspiration of the old Voyageurs and link two widely separated waterways in one single journey.

The expedition started at Bergen in Norway and travelled by canoe along the coast and into the Sognefjord.

The Sognefjord was then joined with the Nordfjord by sledging a canoe across the 1700m high Jostedalsbre, Europe’s largest ice-cap. The return journey was made out of the Nordfjord and back down the coast to Bergen.
