What is Canoe Slalom?
Canoe slalom offers the great excitement and challenge of racing down a series of "gates" against the clock. At club level it is a great fun way to improve your skills and compete with your friends. Slalom competitions are run using a divisional system, which means what ever your ability you will be competing against paddlers of a similar level. There are 5 divisions, namely 4,3,2,and 1 plus the premier division. Division 4 events are usually held on calm flat water with an easy course set out. As you improve through the divisions the water conditions and the courses become more difficult.
Equipment
Slalom boats are designed to be fast and highly maneoverable and are made from lightweight materials. You can use any boat you like until you get to the premier division. For premier division competitions there is a certain criteria a boat must meet to be "race legal".
Paddles tend to be asymmetric and made from lightweight, strong materials like carbon but any paddle will do to start with.
A CE-approved buoyancy aid and helmet must also be worn.
